Peace Orchard for Coventry

As part of Cardinal Newman’s status as a national Beacon School of Peace, a new apple orchard of 300 trees is planned on 3.7 acres of land at Coundon Hall Park. The site is between the playing fields on Tamworth Road and Coundon Wood on Long Lane and will be easily accessible from the car park off the Tamworth Road. The project is a partnership between Cardinal Newman, Normandy Day UK and Coventry City Council, who have offered the site and will help maintain it.
The orchard will commemorate soldiers who fell among the apple orchards of Normandy during the Battle of Normandy between June and August 1944 and is the brainchild of 93 year-old decorated Coventry Normandy veteran, Dennis Davison. Accompanied by on-site and digital information, the orchard will be a practical and enjoyable way of learning about the significance of these historical events, Coventry’s role as the City of Peace and Reconciliation and how to make cider and apple pies!
